The cover shows a computer model of a heterotrimeric G protein complex. α - Helices are red and β sheets are yellow. G proteins are molecular switches involved in signal transduction and heterotrimeric proteins relay signals from cell surface receptors to their effector, including ion channels and enzymes, within a cell. In the forthcoming review by Plagge et al., the major characteristics of the Gnas locus is summarised and the physiological roles of Gα and its variant, XLα proteins at postnatal and adult stages as defined by genetic mutations are described.
