Cover shows a coloured scanning electron micrograph of the ovulation process. The egg (red, centre) has ruptured the external surface of the ovary (germinal epithelium, dark green). The image clearly shows the thick glycoprotein layer (zona pellucida, red), which entirely surrounds the egg. The egg is also partly surrounded by granulosa cells (light green) and liquor folliculi fluid (yellow).
Magnification: x 1850.
