Relationships between methoxyindoles and hydroxyindoles formed from 5-hydroxytryptamine in rat pineal gland

D. J. Morton and B. Potgieter

5-Hydroxytryptophol, 5-methoxytryptophol, 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid, 5-methoxyindole-3-acetic acid, N-acetylserotonin and N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine produced in pineal gland culture from [14C]serotonin were measured after thin-layer chromatographic separation. A correlation between the amounts of hydroxy- and corresponding methoxyindoles was sought. The results showed a correlation between N-acetylserotonin levels and the production of N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, whereas no correlation between the other hydroxy- and methoxyindoles was found.
