ADDENDUM

 Since this paper was submitted a report has been published which states that 'there is no inherent abnormality of thyroid function in normal Jamaicans' (Cobb, J. S., Adam, M., Pegg, P. J., Keane, P. M. & Massey, J. C. (1970). Thyroid function in euthyroid Jamaicans. J. clin. Endocr. Metab.31, 450–452). Convalescent hospital patients were studied which might in itself explain the difference in results. Thyroidal 131I clearance was found to average 19·6 ml/min, somewhat higher than our results. It is difficult to understand why clearance results, corrected for extrathyroidal neck activity, were found to be higher than the uncorrected results, especially when the 21/2 h corrected thyroid uptake values were lower. Data on radioactive thyroxine turnover in six patients were also presented. The mean thyroxine secretion rate in these subjects was 66·2 µg/day. This is 85% of the quoted control values and represents approximately 65% of the values
