A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR EXTIRPATION OF THE LEVATOR ANI MUSCLE IN THE RAT

C. L. RASSAERT, A. WOLFF and E. A. McDOUGALL

The description of the myotrophic activity assay in the rat using the levator ani muscle (Eisenberg & Gordon, 1950) has been followed by many modifications. These changes include the reduction in assay time (Hershberger, Shipley & Meyer, 1953; Metcalf & Broich, 1961; Potts, Arnold & Beyler, 1960; Sala & Baldratti, 1963), a suggested change in muscle nomenclature (Hayes, 1965) and varying statistical interpretations of the assay (Ahrén, Arvill & Hjalmarson, 1962; Ercoli, Bruni, Falconi, Gardi & Meli, 1960; Hershberger et al. 1953). Although progress has been made in these areas of the assay, a more rapid method of extirpation would be beneficial. This report describes a simple method of approaching the levator ani from the dorsal aspect of the rectum thus minimizing dissection time.

The animal is placed on its back upon a cork board and the hind paws are pinned down as shown in Fig. 1 a. A third
