Administration of oestrogen enlarges the oviducts in adult or young birds (see Chakravorti & Sadhu, 1964); prolactin and progesterone can act synergically with oestradiol in low doses but seem to have an antagonistic effect at higher oestrogen levels (Steel & Hinde, 1963). Oestrogen alone or with prolactin inhibits the crop sac reaction (Folley, 1939). The effect of oestrogen, progesterone and prolactin on oviduct weight has not been investigated in birds in which an incubation patch is not formed.
The pigeon (Columba livia Gmelin), the common house crow (Corvus splendens Vieillot) and the kite (Milvus migrans Boddaert) received i.m. injections of oestradiol dipropionate (Ciba) and progesterone (Lutocyclin, Ciba) in oil. Aqueous preparations of these steroids (Oestradiol, Ciba; Ethisterone, Ciba) and prolactin (NIH-P-S4, ovine) were also used. Two doses of the oily preparations were injected: 5·0 and 0·5 mg. both of oestrogen and progesterone. They were injected individually or in combination in
