THE EFFECT IN VITRO OF PURIFIED HYPOTHALAMIC EXTRACT ON THE GROWTH HORMONE CONTENT OF THE RAT PITUITARY

S. SYMCHOWICZ, W. D. PECKHAM, R. ONERI, C. A. KORDUBA and P. L. PERLMAN

Anterior pituitaries from young female rats were incubated in Krebs-Ringer solution at 37° for 4·5–5 hr. A purified acetic acid extract of pig hypothalami was added, at various concentrations, to the incubation medium. The results show that the purified hypothalamic preparation increased the growth-hormone content in the supernatant of pituitary homogenates, suggesting an enhancement of hormone synthesis by the hypothalamic preparation. It is also suggested that the hypothalamic extract when incubated with pituitaries causes an increase in the rate of the release of growth hormone with prolonged incubation.
